The BDS 3 and 4 are both 3 inches in length, but the BDS 3 is thinner and has a narrower bill.
According to Gerald Swindle, the thinner profile of the BDS 3 allows the bait to run deeper than most other fat-bodied, wide-wobbling baits. He fishes the BDS 3 on a 7-foot medium-action rod with 12- to 20-pound test line, depending on the cover he is fishing and the depth he wants the lure to run.
“The 5-foot mark has traditionally been the deepest limit of the wobbler-style crankbaits,” Swindle says. “But on 15-pound line, a BDS 3 will get down into the 6-foot range. That’s critical when the primary cover is in that 5- to 6-foot zone.”
Swindle’s preferred terrain for the BDS 3 is riprap and grass.
“Most riprap banks are on a 45-degree angle and a BDS 3 hugs the rocks better, making solid contact with those key boulders down in the 5 to 6 foot range,” he notes.
“Also, since a BDS 3 runs a little deeper, it’s become one of my favorite baits for cranking grass in the early spring,” he says. “When everyone else is throwing Rat-L-Traps over grass, I’ll crank a BDS 3 down and wobble it over 5- to 6-foot grass for a different presentation.”
