Kelly Jordon loves big jerkbaits. Just as he favors the big Pointer 128 in the original Pointer Series, he leans towards the Slender Pointer 127MR in the Slender Series.
“When I’m trying to hone in on a big jerkbait bite, I usually have a Pointer 128 and a Slender 127 on the deck,” Jordon says. “They are both 5-inch suspending jerkbaits that run about the same depth, but their profiles and actions in the water are completely different.”
“To me, the 127 is a finesse version of a 128 because the 127 is so much slimmer than a 128,” he continues. “If I’ve been getting bites on a 128 and suddenly the bite shuts off, I’ll pick up the 127 for a more subdued profile.
A lot of times that big jerkbait bite is still on, but the profile just needs to be scaled down, and the 127 lets me make that adjustment while still throwing a big jerkbait.”
Jordon uses the same tackle for both the 128 and the 127: a 7-foot medium action rod with 10- to 14- pound test.
“If you’re fishing around heavy grass, you can even go up to a 16- or 17-pound test on those bigger baits,” he says. “Wrestling a big fish on a big jerkbait out of grass on 12-pound test can be a little unnerving.” — Kelly Jordon
